With the nice weather gracing us this week, let’s be honest what’s really on our minds. Finals? Please, of course not! Getting into shape for beach season! I’m kidding of course (c’mon it’s March), however if I can stress one thing to incoming law students, it is the importance of exercise. Law school is stressful and demanding. Most students spend over 60 hours a week sitting in the library or class. Exercise helps you to get a better sleep, it reduces stress, increases brain activity, gives you more energy, boots your immune system, etc. Should I go on? It’s a no brainer. Take an hour or two out of your busy day and stay active. Here are a few great local places to go.

Elizabeth Park
Elizabeth Park is located
right down the street from the law school. It encompasses 102 acres and has an
array of gardens, greenhouses, laws, picnic grove, recreation areas and a pond.
The park is also nationally known for its roses, which are located in a two and
a half acre garden that boats over 800 varieties of roses. Many of the law
school’s intramurals play their games here.
Whether you want to go for
a run with your dog, go for a bike ride, take a stroll or play some tennis,
Elizabeth Park is a great option. Here is the website for further information:

The reservoir is located
right past West Hartford Center on Farmington Ave, about 10 minutes from the law
school. The 3,000-acre area is filled with over 30 miles of paved and gravel
roads for walkers, runners and cyclists. There are hiking trails, picnic groves
and has cross-country and snow shoeing trails for the winter. Here is the
website for further information and trail maps:

Local Gyms
There are also a variety
of local gyms in the area, which range in prices. Work Out World (WOW), located
at 99 Shield Street in West Hartford, is fairly inexpensive with great hours
for the busy student. New York Sports Club, located right in Blue Back Square
at 65 Memorial Drive is a bit more expensive but has great hours, equipment and
a variety of classes. Other local gyms in West Hartford include Anytime
Fitness, Bally Total Fitness, Jewish Community Center, Big Sky and Excel
Fitness.
West Hartford Yoga (WHY),
located at 23 Brook Street is one of the best yoga studios in the area. The
staff and instructors are extremely friendly and the classes range from
beginner to expert. I personally have found yoga to be a great way to stay in
shape and deal with the stresses from law school. More information about the
studio and classes can be found at: http://www.westhartfordyoga.com/.
And don’t forget, there is
a gym located in the basement of Starr in case you want to get in a quick
workout between classes!
So ace those exams but
remember to enjoy the nice weather and stay active!
